20 Weeks

I’m 20 weeks pregnant!  So if you believe a pregnancy is 40 weeks long, I’m halfway done.  I don’t feel halfway done at all.

My son is about 6 1/2 inches long from head to bottom and about 10 inches from head to heel — the length of a banana.

My weight is up 5lbs (from my pre-pregnancy weight).  It was up 7lbs last week, but then I got sick.  My fundal height (as measured by me and Andy) is 18cm.  By this point, that number should equal how many weeks pregnant I am.  18 is pretty close to 20, so this is good.  I’ve probably felt the baby move.  I’ve had a lot of gas and it’s hard to tell right now what is baby movement and what is gas movement.  I’m pretty sure I’ve felt the baby.

My uterus amazes me.  It’s very hard, I can totally feel exactly where it is.  If I’ve been standing up for a while and lay down, I can feel that it’s low and jutting out more.  Once I’ve been laying down for a moment, I can feel that it’s moved back into my abdomen and up a little bit due to gravity.  I assume as my uterus gets bigger it will move around less.  I like feeling it, the changes enthrall me.  Andy claims I look bigger every time he sees me.  I’ve definitely “popped”.

I was very sick last week (and still not fully recovered).  It was just a cold, but it was the worst cold I remember ever having.  It’s the sickest Andy’s seen me in over a decade.  We went to the OB on Friday to have the baby checked out to make sure he wasn’t in distress, and he’s just fine.  Heart rate and movement were right as they should be, he didn’t appear affected by my illness at all.  I think I experienced my first parent moment at that appointment.  *I* was miserable and the doctor couldn’t do anything for me … but I was assured that my son was just fine so I left the appointment happy and relieved.

We’re thinking about baby names.  This is going to be a very long conversation, I see us waiting quite some time to make a decision. We’re also thinking about nursery décor/theme.  I’m hoping that decision happens quicker!  We’re going for something gender neutral (so baby number two can share the room) like Classic Pooh, but I don’t like any of the designs I’ve seen in Rochester. I’m planning a trip to the cities soon to see if I can find something I like up there.

Later today I’m going to a class called “Exercise and Pregnancy”.  It’s put on by DAHLC (my gym) but held in a lecture hall.  There wasn’t much a class description; I’m hoping they go over specific stretches and strength training moves and not just the benefit of exercising while pregnant.  It’s location (a lecture hall rather than a fitness classroom) makes me wary that I might not get what I want from it.

Andy and I start our six week prenatal class in two weeks.  It’s a little early, but the session we wanted was canceled and the later one was too late.  I hope to take very good notes so I still remember everything come July!
